With the help of a mentor, she decided to pursue the Certifed Ethical Hacker (CEH)H certification, a program designed for those without prior security experience. And the rest, as they say, is history. Thanks to the C|EH, Morgane was able to land her first job as a security engineer at SAP and has been climbing the ranks ever since. Don’t miss this inspiring story of determination and success in the competitive world of cybersecurity.”
And the C|EH was one of the only security certifications where if you were taking the program, you didn’t need to have prior security experience
Tell us about your journey as a cybersecurity professional.
I am Morgane, a security engineer at SAP. I was a software engineer for about four years. But I’ve always been interested in security.
At my first job, I was doing firmware for smart card readers. So that was a bit related to security. And I was interested in it.
So, I had a mentor who helped me through this journey and tried to find a job in security. And one of his first pieces of advice was to get a cybersecurity certification. So that’s how I took the C|EH.
And after the C|EH, I got my first job as a security engineer about two years ago. Yes, I started with SAP.
What caught your attention about the C|EH program?
So, I decided to do the C|EH program because I wanted to work in security. But the thing is, I didn’t have any security experience. And the C|EH was one of the only security certifications where if you were taking the program, you didn’t need to have prior security experience.
So, that was a good introduction for me because I could have an overview of different security topics, have some hands-on labs, and still get the security certification that would enable me to get a job in security.
How has the C|EH benefitted your career?
So, I believe that C|EH has benefited my career. It enabled me to get a job in security. I know that certification is not the only thing, and you must work for it.
But I believe that getting the C|EH certification enabled me to get job interviews because HR, in the first place, is looking at certifications when you’re trying to get a security job, even when you don’t have security experience. So, I believe that it enabled me to get more interviews.
And it prepared me for security interviews. Because with the C|EH, you see a lot of security topics. And you touch on several things like network or cryptography that I might not know before the certification. So, I believe that it trained me for the security interview questions. So, in that sense, it helped my career.
How recognized is the C|EH in your organization and the industry?
Honestly, I’m not sure how recognized C|EH is in my organization. I believe that they might have a list of security certifications that are well known. I know that was a well-known certification to my manager when he hired me. And I know that the security certification was a plus in my interview.
Did the C|EH help you to get higher pay, a promotion, or a job that you wanted?
So, as I was saying, it helped me get the job I wanted. I didn’t get a promotion or raise because of the C|EH. Since I was a software engineer, the C|EH was not something that interested them. But I wanted to work in security.
How has the C|EH certification impacted you?
It first impacted my way of seeing certifications because that was my first certification. So, I believe that it was eye-opening and what was needed of me to get a certification. And it also opened my eyes to more security topics as I didn’t have security experience before.
I believe that it impacted me in that way and was more eye-opening about the security issues that I could encounter and what interests me the most.
Did the C|EH help you give back to the community in any way?
So, I believe that since I got more experience in security, it helped me give back to the community in the sense that I am now a mentor in my company, a security mentor. So, we do have a program where software developers might get a security mentor to be more aware of security and how to develop the security mindset.
So, this is the second year that I’m doing that. I still go to security meetings like the OWASP meeting, but I must admit that I’m not a speaker. I would like to, but maybe soon.
What was your favorite part of the C|EH program? Please explain why.
Yeah, the hands-on lab was more fun because you get to see what the theory is. So, you try to use your security knowledge to do something.
And I believe that’s all we want to do. So that was the most fun part, I would say. And the other topic that I enjoyed was cryptography, and you know, especially where you would have to perform TLS handshake or anything like that.
Do you attribute any part of your success to EC-Council? If so, do you have a message for the EC-Council team?
So, I believe that EC-Council played a part in my career because their training was amazing and helped me get the certification, which helped me get interviews, and the job I wanted. So, I would say thank you to the EC-Council team, and to keep up the good work. And yeah, continue updating the material to ensure we’re all up to date, and that would be it.
